Summer at the Center 2005 Interns

Kate Rice

Ms. Rice has been a participant in the Center's Extemp Group since its inaugural year. As a student at Iowa City West High School, Kate placed 2nd at the NFL National Tournament in Domestic Extemp and was in the MBA Extemp Round's Demonstration Round as a junior. She also received the J. Scott Wunn Scholars Award from CPS in 2004. Her successes in extemp and Lincoln Douglas debate have been tremendous but are overshadowed by her incredible teaching ability. During last year's program, she took the initiative to coach younger students by listening to practice speeches and working on analysis.

Katie Foley

Ms. Foley was a participant in the Center's Oratory Group in 2004 and joins us this year to assist with Oratory and Lincoln Douglas Debate. As a student at Eagan High School, she placed 3rd at the Minnesota State Tournament and qualified for the National Tournament in Philadelphia.

Kevin Troy

Mr. Troy was the recipient of the Center's merit scholarship award in 2004. While competing at Eagan High School, he qualified to nationals in policy, student congress, and LD debate, as well as Domestic Extemp. He was the 2003 NFL National Champion in Domestic Extemp, the 2005 runner up at the Minnesota State Tournament in Policy Debate, and won the 2005 MBA Extemp Round Robin. Kevin will undoubtedly be everywhere around the Center this summer!

Ernie Rose

Mr. Rose has debated four years for Des Moines North High School. Ernie first experienced national success his sophomore year, when he placed 15th at the National Forensic League Tournament. His junior year, Ernie progressed to out rounds at Glenbrooks and St. Marx, and finished second at
the Iowa Round Robin. He also qualified to the Tournament of Champions, earning bids at Omaha Westside and Iowa Caucus, and advanced to the run-off round at the TOC. Ernie's success continued into his senior year, during which he won Iowa Caucus and the Mid-America Cup at Valley, placed second at Omaha Westside and the Skyway Round Robin, and participated in the MBA Round Robin. Ernie was also a semifinalist at Apple Valley and Wake Forest, and led the nation in TOC bids by accruing eight.

CPS Internship Opportunities

As a elite institute for our students, the Summer at the Center engages in teaching, research, and outreach programs on a broad range of speech, communications, creative, and public policy issues. Lecturers and teaching specialists complement the expertise of our senior faculty. Interns share their skills and knowledge with students and the broader community. Research associates and research fellows help the Institute carry out a vibrant research agenda. Clerical and program staff support all of the Center’s activities.

Vacancies at the Center are rare but we encourage interested parties to contact our internship coordinator, Amber Windschitl for additional details. Please download the following application and mail or attach the form in addition to a cover letter and recommendations when contacting Ms. Windschitl. Most interns are first year out students and new coaches who wish to learn more about nationally competitive coaching methods and help high school students.
