Division Directors

 

 Cherian Koshy

 Partner, CPS Corporate Consulting, LLP

 Executive Director, Summer at the Center

 

Mr. Koshy is the former coach of Lincoln Douglas debate, Extemporaneous Speaking, and Student Congress at Apple Valley High School where he coached the 2003 Minnesota State Champion and the 2002 NCFL National Runner-Up in extemporaneous speaking. In addition, he has coached numerous Orators and Congress students to local, district, and national championships including NCFL and NFL finalists. His LD debaters  have been considered some of the best in the country and are on staff at numerous institutes. Coaching students to championships at Greenhill, St Marks, Bronx, the MBA Round Robin, and finals of the TOC,  he is also a veteran staff member and division director at the University of Iowa's Summer Institute in Forensics in addition to directing the Advanced Seminar and the Individual Events Division at Stanford's National Institute in Forensics. This is Mr. Koshy's third summer administrating the Summer at the Center, already considered one of the premier Individual Events institutes in the nation.

 

 Michael Arton

 Director of Lincoln Douglas Debate

 

Mr. Arton received his J.D. from Louisiana State University and will be attending Georgetown's School of Law in the fall to receive his L.L.M. in tax law. He is the 2005 Champion of the National Tax Moot Court Competition where he was also named the Best Individual Oralist. He is the former director of forensics at New Orleans Jesuit High School. During his tenure, his students were consistently amongst the best in the nation. In addition to coaching the champion of the MBA Round Robin, his students competed in late elimination rounds at the nation's most prestigious tournaments including the Barkley Forum, Glenbrooks, and the Tournament of Champions. He is a veteran instructor at Stanford University, Yale University, and the University of Iowa. This will be Mr. Arton's first summer in Minnesota and we welcome his experience and talents to our institute.

 

 Jessica Bailey

 Director of Advanced Extemp

 

Ms. Bailey, a graduate of the University of Minnesota, is now a Ph.D. student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and the assistant coach at Cary Academy. As a competitor, she was the runner-up in Lincoln Douglas debate at the NFL National Tournament and won the NFL championship in Expository Speaking and Foreign Extemp. She is a two-time Minnesota State runner-up in extemp speaking. As a coach for Edina High School, she successfully led students to final rounds in several events. Ms. Bailey joins us for her second summer with the Summer at the Center family.

 

  Jim Fedje

 Director of Interpretation Events


Mr. Fedje is the interpretation coach at Lakeville High School in Minnesota. He formerly coached at Eagan High School in Minnesota. Over the past six years, his students have been named NFL and NCFL National Champions in Humorous, Dramatic, and Duo five times. His students have had countless more students just placing in final rounds of NFL and NCFL. His student holds the distinction of being the only student in NFL history to score first on every ballot in the NFL final round. Needless to say, his students excel at local and regional tournament in Minnesota and across the country. Mr. Fedje directed the 2004 Summer at the Center Interpretation division.

 

 Seth Halvorson

 Director of Oratory

 

Mr. Halvorson is an alumnus of Macalester College and Stanford University. He is currently a Ph.D. student at Columbia University in New York. As a competitor, he won the NCFL national tournament and took 2nd at the NFL tournament in Original Oratory. A coach of numerous programs across the nation, his students have won countless regional and national championships. He is a veteran instructor at the University of Iowa and directs the Advanced Seminar at Stanford University. Mr. Halvorson joins us for his second summer.

 

 

 Jeff Hannan

 Director of Congress


Mr. Hannan is a graduate of the University of Florida with degrees in English and Religion and will be pursuing a graduate degree next fall. After the 2004 Summer at the Center institute, Mr. Hannan served as Communications Director for a federal Congressional campaign. His responsibilities included speechwriting, message design, and preparing the candidate for public debates. As a competitor, Mr. Hannan was a very successful LD debater from Nova High School. In 2000, he won the NFL national championship in Congress. A veteran instructor at the University of Iowa and the Florida Forensics Institute, Mr. Hannan is a brilliant teacher and an integral part of the Summer at the Center family.

 

 Tim Sheaff

 Director of General Extemp


Mr. Sheaff is the Director of Forensics at Dowling Catholic High School in West Des Moines, Iowa. At the 2003 NFL National Tournament, Dowling High School was honored as the only school to be named a “Speech and Debate School of Excellence.” A founding member of the Summer at the Center, his passion is extemp. He has coached multiple extempers to the final rounds of The Glenbrooks, St. Marks, Harvard & Pine Crest. Dowling extempers have been invited to 5 straight MBA Round Robins. He also coached extemp at the IE Forum in San Diego. He is the proud father of six.
